October 25, 2016 – Fania, the iconic brand which has evolved from a legendary NYC-based music label known for launching some of the most influential Latin music stars over the past 50 years, to an innovative and digitally-driven global music, entertainment and lifestyle company, is continuing to expand their horizons with ARMADA FANIA, a new pop-up club and store on November 10 from 6:00pm-12:00am at the Knockdown Center in Bushwick, which will be presented in partnership with the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival.
ARMADA FANIA is a great example of Fania’s continued revitalization, as the series showcases an array of young artists utilizing its rich musical legacy to create memorable new pieces of the Fania story for a new generation. The multi-faceted live pop- up experience will highlight various elements of the brand, from diverse and internationally-acclaimed DJs and artists, such as the legendary DJ/producer Kenny Dope, to innovative art installations to exclusive retail merchandise, all housed in unique locations.
On November 10, ARMADA FANIA will take over the Knockdown Center in Bushwick, a 50,000 square foot art center/event space occupying a historic building which has been in continuous use for more than 100 years. The evening will include a stellar DJ lineup whose sounds span a variety of musical styles championed by Fania, including headliner Kenny Dope, the world renown DJ/producer and Brooklyn native whose impressive career spans over 30 years and founded the influential Masters at Work (with Louie Vega); acclaimed LA DJ/producer Jose Marquez known for his infectious global dance rhythms; Uproot Andy, one half of the popular NYC tropical bass DJ team Que Bajo; the eclectic Puerto Rican pan-pop sister DJ act Nina Sky (aka Nicole and Natalie Albino); and the leading latin boogaloo expert DJ Turmix, who helped reinvigorate the latin boogaloo scene in NYC since arriving from Barcelona in 2008.
ARMADA FANIA will also highlight remarkable visual artists whose works are inspired by Fania’s legacy and community. First-generation Puerto Rican artist Carlos Rolón/Dzine (http://www.carlosrolondzine.com/), who is internationally recognized for his elaborately crafted paintings, sculptures and site-specific installations, will exhibit a special piece at the pop-up celebrating Fania’s illustrious history. The piece will be an edited original Super 8mm film clip of the Statue of Liberty shot in the 1970s by his family-this simple looping clip evokes the American Dream with the statue’s raised arm juxtaposed with a hot pink neon Siempre Pa'lante text. The neon sculpture Siempre Pa’Lante (always forward) references the work of The Young Lords Party, a Puerto Rican activist movement of the 1960s that fought for equality, jobs, health care, and education.
Fans attending ARMADA FANIA will also be able to check out a special retail pop-up market filled with Fania’s famed catalogue and exclusive merchandise including vinyl and apparel.
Fania launched ARMADA FANIA in NYC and Miami in 2013 to showcase the remix work by top DJs and producers from around the world. The next installment of ARMADA FANIA
will take place in Los Angeles
at Los Globos
on December 10
, and will travel other US and international cities in 2017. For more info on upcoming ARMADA FANIA events, please visit: www.armadafania.com
Fania is the most transcendental label in the history of Latin music. Home to a roster of iconic music stars, these artists offered a cornucopia of styles that surpassed the boundaries of traditional Latin music and set the path for the genres of Latin big band, Afro-Cuban jazz, boogaloo, salsa and Latin R&B. By bringing together the eclectic vision of Dominican bandleader Johnny Pacheco with the business savvy of Lawyer Jerry Masucci, Fania created a unique sound: the apex of tropical music, combined with the swing of big band jazz and the gritty vibe of American R&B. The label provided an artistic heaven for a young generation of musicians who were inspired to experiment with new musical formats. It also gave birth to a musical group, the legendary Fania All Stars that changed the history of Latin Music. www.fania.com
