TICO ALL STARS – LIVE AT THE VILLAGE GATE The line reached around the corner to Bleeker Street. The excited Latin Jazz enthusiasts were eager to move into the Village Gate night club this evening. History was to be made. It was Monday night, May 23, 1966 and the Mambo/Salsa/Boogaloo era was at its peak. Latin music enthusiasts from New York had countless venues to experience the pleasure of seeing their favorite bands perform live for listening and dancing pleasure. For just a few bucks. But tonight was special. Tonight they would get to see most of them perform together, on stage, for the very first time. For $2.75. Tonight they would get to see the likes of Tito Puente, Joe Cuba, Eddie Palmieri, Charlie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, Cachao, Ricardo Ray, Johnny Pacheco, Candido, Chino Pozo, Bobby Rodriguez, Barry Rogers, Victor Paz, Chocolate Armenteros, Jimmy Sabater, Cheo Feliciano, Santitos Colon, Chivirico and Monguito. Just to name a few. Tonight they would perform as the Tico All-Stars. Tico, the label they recorded for, brought them together for this special performance. The genius of Morris Levy, president of Tico, and the power he wielded, made this possible. Along with the assistance of Symphony Sid, the premier Latin music radio personality of his time. The 'Gate' filled up fast as the musicians tuned their instruments. Then the thunderous voice of Symphony Sid welcomed the excited crowd. Johnny Pacheco introduced the band and the music began. You will be there as you listen to the greatest jam session ever performed by some of the greatest musicians of their time. Once again Fania Records makes this possible for the drip.fm members. As this special album will be available, digitally, for the very first time. Bobby Marin
