BIOGRAPHY:
Similar in style to Fania, the Vaya imprint generated some of the most beloved LPs of the salsa era. In 1971, the seamless Cheo saw the emergence of Puerto Rican crooner Cheo Feliciano as a solo artist, including the blistering Tite Curet Alonso anthem "Anacaona." 1974's Celia & Johnny, on the other hand, confirmed Celia Cruz as the unequivocal Queen of Salsa - guided by the knowing touch of Sonora Matancera fanatic Johnny Pacheco, who adds oodles of retro swing to the smash hit "Químbara." Striving to refresh the sound of tropical music, Vaya concentrated mostly on star vocalists - but it also allowed space for such Latin jazz excursions as Mongo Santamaría's majestic Live At Yankee Stadium concert recording.
