Latin music fans remember "Tumba La Caña Jibarito" as recorded by a young Celia Cruz with the ultimate tropi-pop orchestra, Cuba's La Sonora Matancera. But in 1972, La Sonora Ponceña recorded a daring salsa cover of this song for its classic Desde Puerto Rico A Nueva York LP (the one that kicks off with the mega-hit "Prende El Fogón.") The piano by Ponceña leader Papo Lucca is particularly flavorful here, and the raucous vocalizing by Tito Gómez takes "Tumba La Caña" to new tropical heights.
