When Johnny Pacheco and Willie Colon co-produce an album, you unquestionably expect to be treated to a recording of the highest quality; and you surely will not be disappointed when you listen to Rafi Valenzuela’s “La Diferente”. It was 1971, and new bands were emerging all through New York and Puerto Rico at a rapid pace. “La Diferente” was one of the few to endure the fierce battles and would go on to sign a recording contract with the prestigious Fania label. The coordination of percussionists Rafi Valenzuela, Luis Bonilla and Chino De Jesus; Jose Febles’ voicing of the trumpet, sax and trombone; the vocal stylings of Hector (Cuco) Roche; the great piano work by Gilbert Colon; and the veteran saxophonist, Jose (Chombo) Silva’s participation are all key elements to the success of this album. All of these tasty ingredients are blended just right for a scrumptious album that really cooks.
