In 1961, she moved to New York, launching a legendary career as a solo artist.

She recorded for the Tico label together with Nuyorican bandleader Tito Puente. Her career experienced new heights when she signed with the Vaya label - a subdivision of the Fania imprint. Some of the hits from that era include "Dos Jueyes," “El Guabá,” “Oriza Eh,” “A La Buena Sí,” and “Soy Antillana.”

From that moment on, La Guarachera de Oriente (as Celia was known in Cuba), became an international icon of Latin American culture.
