Bobby Valentín was born in the town of Orocovis, Puerto Rico. He began his career as a trumpet player. At age 15, he moved with his family to New York, where he formed the group Los Satélites together with Joe Quijano. His professional career began in 1958. He formed his own orchestra in 1965, switching to playing the bass and earning the title of El Rey del Bajo (King of the Bass). He joined the Fania label, recording such memorable hits as “Aquella Mujer,” “Guaramberé,” “La Rumba Te Espera,” and “Muero en Tu Tierra.”
