Johnny Pacheco was born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, on March 25, 1935. He is the son of Rafael Pacheco, musical director of Santo Domingo's famous Orquesta Santa Cecilia. Johnny was deeply influenced by his father. He was 11 when his family migrated to New York. He attended the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, where he studied percussion. He also played the accordion, sax and clarinet.
In 1960, he formed the band Pacheco y su Charanga. He was a passionate supporter of traditional Cuban music - an influence that would define his entire career.

A historic event took place in 1963, when he founded the Fania label together with attorney Jerry Masucci. In 1964, he recorded his first album for Fania, entitled Cañonazo. In 1968, he organized an orchestra bringing together the greatest Latin stars of the time. The Fania All Stars epitomized the sound of salsa, delivering unforgettable concerts all over the world.
This collection includes unforgettable hits such as “Víralo al Revés,” “Ponle Punto,” “El Güiro de Macorina,” “El Faisán,” and “Me Llevaron la Cartera.” These songs continue to be heard in radio stations across the Latin world.
