On October 18, 2013, the Salsa World will experience the emotion of the FANIA ALL STARS. They will come together for a historical concert at the Coliseo José Miguel Agrelot. This long-awaited event will take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
"We are thrilled to see the Fania All Stars back in Puerto Rico after almost 20 years as the first stop of their World Tour 2013," said Michael Rucker, Chief Marketing Officer of Codigo Group the company that owns Fania Records. "As we approach the 50th Anniversary of Fania Records next year we think this concert in Puerto Rico is a great way to kick-off a World Tour and yearlong celebration. We will be releasing several commemorative box sets of the Fania All Stars as well as DVDs of previous concerts including the last one in San Juan in 1994. Many of these will be available along with other Fania merchandise at this concert."
The Fania All Stars are the most well respected group in Latin Music who toured the world and put Salsa music on the map. The group featured many of the top artists from Fania Records including Johnny Pacheco, Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon, Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, Ruben Blades, Ray Barretto, Ismael Miranda, Bobby Valentin, Larry Harlow and many others.
Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci created the Fania All Stars in 1968. Pacheco a young Dominican bandleader and Masucci an Italian lawyer and former NYC cop had started the Latin "Motown" known as Fania Records in 1964. They pulled the group together to have an opportunity to showcase some of the labels great talent. This showcase went on to become one of the most sought-after groups in Latin music: The Fania All Stars.
Today Fania Records is the home to more than 200 of the top artists' catalogs in tropical music, comprising of more than 3,000 albums by the masters of the genre. These artists mixed a cornucopia of styles that transcended the boundaries of traditional Latin music and set the path for the genres of Latin big band, Afro-Cuban jazz, Boogaloo, Salsa and Latin R&B.
Puerto Rico will witness this gathering of great friends and stars that have marked the greatest history of Salsa in the World, thanks to the work of Félix Muñiz, who worked for months to achieve this show. The concert will be produced by José Dueño. Ticket sales begin this Saturday August 24, on the 40th anniversary of the majestic concert of the FANIA ALL STARS at Yankee Stadium in New York City which thrilled 45,000 people in attendance.
The FANIA ALL STARS, a Salsa institution par excellence, whose musical legacy is second to none, will be reunited with their audience on October 18 at 8:30 pm at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico: A Historical and Unique Concert.
Performing will be the Musical Director and Founding Member Johnny Pacheco, Ismael Miranda; Cheo Feliciano, Willie Colón, Adalberto Santiago, Luigi Texidor, the pianist Larry Harlow, the bassist Bobby Valentín, Roberto Roena (bongoes), Eddie Montalvo (congas), Nicky Marrero y Orestes Vilató (timbal), Héctor "Bomberito" Zarzuela, Eliut Cintrón y Jorge "Ito" Torres, (trumpets), Lewis Kahn, Roberto Rodríguez Jr., Reynaldo Jorge (trombones), and Alfredo de la Fe (violin).
In memory of Yomo Toro, who passed away last year, Héctor Álamo, his godchild, will be playing. Also to be present, "Cita" Rodríguez, daughter of Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez, will have a special presentation singing a few songs of her father.
Although some members are gone, the FANIA ALL STARS pay tribute to them in a show of nearly three hours, full of surprises, and with the help of technology, the public will enjoy the presence of the great Celia Cruz, Héctor Lavoe, Ismael Rivera, Ray Barretto and Santitos Colon. The MC will be Paco Navarro, who always accompanied the FANIA ALL STARS.
