BIOGRAPHY:
A key label in the development of salsa, Al Santiago's Alegre Records was pioneering in many ways. It launched the career of visionary flutist and bandleader Johnny Pacheco, releasing his early charanga albums of the early '60s - including the mega-hit single "El Guiro De Macorina." It was also the label behind Eddie Palmieri's superlative first albums with La Perfecta. And by assembling a conglomerate of virtuoso singers and musicians under the Alegre All Stars moniker, it paved the way for the subsequent creation of the Fania All Stars. Willie Rosario, Kako, Roberto Roena and Rubén Blades were also sponsored by the label.
