To commemorate the legacy of the Latin label that brought us legends like Willie Colón, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Héctor Lavoe, Ray Barretto, Rubén Blades, and Pacheco himself, Craft Latino announced on Tuesday (April 16) a year-long celebration with special releases, merchandise and events."

Uno de los percusionistas más importantes nació en el 7 de abril en La Habana, Cuba. A mudarse a Nueva York en 1950 obtuvo un concierto con la Orquesta de Tito Puente seguida de un grupo más pequeño dirigido por el vibrafonista Cal Tjader. Ambas asociaciones lo llevaron a una mayor exposición de Mongo, pero fue en 1963 cuando se hizo ampliamente conocido con su versión de la composición Watermelon Man de Herbie Hancock, que fue un éxito Top 40.

As we celebrate Fania’s 60th anniversary this year, you’ll see FANIA FEATURES—chronologically highlighting impactful albums released between the ‘60s-‘80s. This month, we're taking a look at the most impactful albums of the ’71-’72 era.

The album Agúzate (Hurry Up) by the duo Ricardo “Richie” Ray & Bobby Cruz, known as the Kings of Salsa, released in 1970 on Alegre Records. The album included salsa songs and ballads in Spanish and English and was a commercial success. There were two major radio hits, the title track and an upbeat salsa song about a popular Colombian dancer “Amparo Arrebato.”  The title track kicks off the album with a bang. It’s a six-minute electrifying tune, “Agúzate” (Hurry Up), written by Ray and Cruz that is a highly streamed salsa classic. Craft Latino is releasing a digital remaster and is making it available in HD audio for the first time (format: 192/24) in celebration of the Fania Records’ 60th Anniversary now!

Recordando uno de los grandes pianistas y compositores, Larry Harlow. Harlow fue entre los muchos talentos involucrados con Fania Records, con el que grabó más de 106 álbumes de varios artistas, y 50 de los suyos. Simultáneamente, trabajó en varias producciones con sus sellos subsidiarios. Ha sido tan prolífico y exitoso que ha sido honrado por sus álbumes memorables, como “El Exigente”, “Me and My Monkey” (por cual recibio Disco de Oro), “Electric Harlow”, “Yo soy latino”, “Hommy” , “Salsa” y “La Raza Latina”, un álbum que contó con la colaboración de Rubén Blades que llevo a Harlow recibir una nominación para un Grammy. En todas y cada una de sus producciones, Harlow dejó su huella como compositor, músico, productor y director. Fue un mentor para muchos que ahora se han hecho un nombre y se han convertido en parte de la historia de nuestra música.

The Harvey Averne Dozen album was released in 1969

The Harvey Averne Dozen album was released in 1969 on Fania Records. It was the second album for The Harvey Averne Dozen band, which included Latin soul, Latin funk and boogaloo sounds, produced by Harvey Averne and arranged by Marty Sheller. The opening track “Never Learned To Dance” is a Latin soul song with disco influences that the cover notes state is Harvey’s favorite on the album. Other standout tracks include “Lullaby from Rosemary’s Baby” which was sampled by rapper Big Daddy Kane in 1993 on the track “Rest In Peace” and “I Feel Fine” which is a Beatles cover sampled by Tom Caruana in his 2010 remix album Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers in which he uses Wu-Tang vocals to Beatles songs. Craft Latino is releasing a digital remaster and is making it available in HD audio for the first time (format: 192/24) today.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of the great pianist and band leader, Pete Rodriguez. The world has lost an incredible Latin artist whose music will continue to influence for generations to come. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

Conga master Ray Barretto started his music career

Conga master Ray Barretto started his music career as a jazz sideman in 1949 when he was only twenty years old. Never straying from his roots, he was a great admirer of swing, jam, jazz, and the genres’ most noted figures, such as Dizzy Gillespie. He made these genres his own. By the time he was 38 he took on a new dimension when he replaced Mongo Santamaría in the Tito Puente Orchestra, with whom he recorded his first album, Dance Mania. The album’s success would set the stage for his future professional career. Between 1968 and 1975, Barretto recorded nine albums on the Fania label, which he helped create. The third album he released as a bandleader on Fania in 1969 was Together, which came in hot after his success with the Acid and Hard Hands albums. This session included eight tracks, all in Spanish except for the title track. The music styles ranged from funk, guaguancó, salsa, cha-cha, Latin jazz and descarga. While Together didn’t have the punch that Acid did, some gems that came out of this recording included “Vive y Vacia,” “Hipocrecia y Falsedad” and the title track. He was a sensitive artist, open to all musical currents and manifestations, which allowed him to experiment with the many different rhythms he infused with his unique style. Fania released a Ray Barretto compilation album the next year after he released Together.
